Frequently Asked Questions
What sorts of things can I report?
Lots of things! Check out the Make a new report page.
Do you support other camera/phones besides the Apple iPhone?
Yes! The iPhone is unique in that when you take a picture the location of that picture is automatically embedded in the image. HOWEVER(!), you can still use Snap311 with another device. You will have to explicitly tell us the location, by entering it in the email message subject. (E.g., “123 Park Ave,” or “23rd street & 8th ave” will both work.)
I see a crime happening! How do I report it?!??
Call 911! We do not have the capability to send a report to the NYPD. That being said, take a photo and email it to witness@snap311.com. We’ll publish a copy in hopes that it helps someone.
What do you do with the email message subject?
We use the email message subject field to determine location, if the image does not contain one. HINT!: If you’re on a device which does not geolocate images, put the nearest address in the message subject! We’ll use it to try and find the nearest location (e.g., “123 Park Ave,” or “23rd street & 8th ave” will both work.
What do you do with the email message body?
Whatever you put in the message body will be used as an additional description of your report. HINT!: You can more fully describe your report by putting a sentence or three in the email message body, in addition to the image.
Can you accept reports without images?
Not at this time. Call 311 directly!
Can I upload multiple images?
Yes. Simply attach all the images to the email message.
Can I upload images from my computer?
You can do so by sending email from your home computer.
Do you have an iPhone app?
Not at this time. Unless you consider the iPhone’s capable camera and email system an “App.” ;-) That being said, if you want an icon which can appear on your iPhone desktop, you can bookmark our Make a New Report page.
